About Me

Animals come into shelters for many reasons - maybe the owner moved and can’t take the animal with them, maybe the owner refuses to potty train the animal, maybe the animal is a stray and we never really know their background, or maybe we know their story and it is so devastating that we cannot fathom how such severe mistreatment can happen in a community and go unnoticed.

I want everyone to meet Hattie. Hattie was surrendered to a shelter without valid reason after living outside for 6 years. Hattie didn’t know what it was like to lay on a couch. Hattie had never watched a movie with her owners. Hattie never got to go on adventures. And most importantly, Hattie never got to experience life as a dog who was loved.

She arrived to the shelter in miserable shape. Her skin was bright red, infection and mange covered her body, she had an eye and ear infection, and she itched so bad she would bleed. She needed out. She needed to feel safe. She needed to know that she did not spend the last six years of her life in misery just to have it end in a kill shelter.

We had a wonderful foster family ask to foster a dog at the shelter that was most at risk of euthanasia, the dog that needed help and reassurance the most. That dog was Hattie.

We brought Hattie to the vet immediately, where she was assessed for all of her treatable (and avoidable if properly cared for) medical concerns. After lots of medications and treatments, she was ready to start her new life. Then, off she went to her loving fosters.

Although she had never been inside, she immediately fell asleep for the night without making a peep. She never had a single accident in the house. She never barked in her crate. For being mistreated for so long, we realized that Hattie had a spark in her that we had never seen in a dog before. She has so much love for everyone she meets. She is one of the sweetest dogs we have ever had in our program.

I often question how some dogs can go through so much and yet still be so accepting of the potential of love around them. How can a dog be tied out in the cold winters and the excruciatingly hot summers for 6 years and still want to be friends with humans, even though they have failed her miserably thus far?

If it were me, I would have given up. I would have had no love for any human. I would have lost my mind in the utter loneliness of little to no human interaction for six years. I would never be able to trust that a human could be good in this world, because how could they be with the condition she was in? But that isn’t Hattie. Hattie is a lot stronger of a soul than myself. Hattie did not question my affection towards her. She never showed me any aggression even though I came from the same kind that caused her to live a life in pure neglect.

Hattie is what I like to call a miracle. She is a dog that loves everyone even though she has been neglected for so long. She is a dog that is a prime example of why we rescue the ones left behind.

Over these past few weeks, Hattie has learned what it is like to be loved. She has mastered the couch potato status with the current animals in her home. She is crate and house-trained and good with kids. At 6 years young, she is the perfectly mellow, easy-going dog that still enjoys a good romp around the yard with the dogs in her foster home. She is a huge fan of sweaters and is adorable in all of them. She does not tear up anything, does not have any interest in being mischievous, and overall, she just wants to relax and be loved. She snuggles with the dogs, cats, and humans in her foster home and we are making sure that she makes up for all of the time she spent hoping for a better tomorrow.

Her skin is so much less red, her eye and ear infections are gone, and we have her on a food that makes her comfortable and not in pain with a constant need to itch. She is healthy now. We have taught her what it is like to be loved, and now she is ready to share that with a family of her own.

There are a lot of dogs looking for homes this holiday season, but Hattie deserves a loving forever more than anything. She deserves the world because until a few weeks ago, it was never given to her.

Please consider adopting Hattie this holiday season and giving her all of the couch snuggles. If you are unable to adopt at this time, please share Hattie’s story so that she can find a home and so people can hear her story. She spent 6 years of her life without a voice and now it is our job to give her one. If you are considering adopting a dog in the near future, please consider Hattie. She is the sweetest bundle of love and deserves a person or family that recognizes her magnificence.
